Insurance and healthcare

Students are responsible for their own insurance. Please check if your own insurance covers health insurance, liabilities, and accidents that may occur during your stay in the Netherlands. VHL University of Applied Sciences (VHL) does not accept any responsibility for such risks as loss of property, accidents, illnesses etc. We will assist all students to acquire insurance coverage for these risks. Insurance fees for students are approximately 500 euro per year. Insurance is compulsory for all students.

European (EEA) students

Health insurance

You may not reside in the Netherlands - not even temporarily - if you are not properly insured against the costs of medical treatment. Dutch Immigration service will check to make sure that your insurance coverage meets Dutch standards. Most EEA students can ask for an EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card)  at their own private insurance company. You can also arrange your insurance, on your own, on the website of AON.

Liability insurance

If you cause an accident and someone is injured or if you damage someone's property, you are responsible for paying all the costs of the accident. Therefore we strongly advise you to arrange a liability insurance.

Non-European students

Health insurance

If you are a non-EU citizen, you will be compulsory insured for medical costs and liability. In this case VHL staff will arrange insurance for you; however, the insurance policy will be issued to your name. This means that you are liable and thus responsible for your own actions, not VHL University of Applied Sciences. VHL will arrange insurance on your behalf with AON Consultancy.

Liability insurance

If you cause an accident and someone is injured or if you damage someone's property, you are responsible for paying all the costs of the accident. VHL will arrange insurance on your behalf as part of your insurance with AON Consultancy.

Other insurances

We strongly recommend you to take out a repatriation insurance and household content insurance. Repatriation means returning to your home country. If you happen to become seriously ill, you might prefer to get medical care close to home. It would be wise to have an insurance policy covering the costs of transferring back to your home country in these situations. Household contents insurance covers the contents of your home against loss due to causes such as theft, fire or water damage.

VHL will arrange insurance on your behalf as part of  your insurance with AON Consultancy.

Please remember that VHL University of Applied Sciences can only arrange insurance for you after you have been admitted to one of VHL's international study programmes.

Please read more information about insurances on the websites of Study in Holland and Zorgverzekering Informatie Centrum (health Insurance information centre).
