High-quality practice-oriented research into innovative solutions for a more sustainable world.
Professors, researchers, lecturers and students conduct high-quality practice-oriented research together with partners from the professional field. It provides innovative solutions to issues from (international) business and society for a more sustainable world. The research results are also used in the educational programmes at our university of applied sciences.
Together with partners from the professional field, we contribute to innovative and sustainable developments through research and knowledge valorisation.
We conduct research in the fields of agro & food, animal, green business, climate & environment, laboratory sciences, and water & nature. With some projects covering multiple areas.
While conducting research, students can use our VHL research facilities, such as Living Labs, the Food Technology Application Center and the Water Application Center.
A future-proof world requires changes. These can be summarised into four transitions. We, along with the professional field and the government, make a significant contribution to these. A task that VHL is more than happy to undertake.

The RAAK-PRO Diadema II project, is a pioneering effort to restore populations of the herbivorous sea urchin Diadema antillarum on Caribbean coral reefs, that commenced on January 1st, 2024. This four-year endeavor is an essential step toward a novel approach for restoring the ecological balance of these fragile marine ecosystems, and the urgent need to increased grazing to reduce algae cover and facilitate coral recruitment and survival.
The research is divided into six themes based on the international sustainability agenda (Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs).
In Food and Agri the focus is on the transition to sustainable production, good cooperation within the chain, and proper alignment with consumers and society. This should offer prospects for farmers, businesses, and society.
How can we effectively use state-of-the-art technology and modern measurement methods? What practice-oriented applications ensure sustainable, livable implementation for a positive impact on animals, humans, and nature?
How do you keep the soil and living environment healthy, livable, and attractive? By applying innovations and devising feasible and affordable solutions, we ensure a more sustainable and better livable environment.
Ensuring enough water of good quality is increasingly becoming a challenge. This requires sustainable and future-proof water and nature management to secure sufficient clean water, nature development, agriculture, recreation, and industry.
How do we find innovative solutions for issues related to health, food, and biotechnology? At Van Hall Larenstein (VHL) Researchers and students collaborate on practice-oriented research, where knowledge is directly applied in the field.
The agro-food sector is becoming greener. As the most sustainable university of applied sciences in the Netherlands, VHL contributes to making an impact in the rural area's sustainability and the way we produce and process our food.
