Water Technology

Physically powered water technologies

The Water Technology applied research group, run jointly by Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences (HVHL) and NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, is a knowledge centre supporting private sector initiatives through the provision of high-quality research and expertise within a higher vocational education setting. It covers water processing, wastewater treatment, generating energy from water, and detecting particulates. These processes are based on some of the principles of physics such as thermodynamics, ultrasound and electro-hydrodynamics. Through the development and implementation of research projects in this field, the knowledge centre aims to nurture a new generation of professionally trained engineers, while also contributing to the development of the province of Friesland and ultimately the Netherlands as a whole. The group also supports the vision and principles of the WaterCampus and is committed to ensuring good value for money for technology businesses.

What we do

Develop, establish, lead and implement projects in the field of applied research for water technology. Provide input to higher vocational education programmes, in-house company training and technical support to academic groups.

About the professor

Dr. Luewton L. F. Agostinho is a physicist and structural engineer. He is a graduate of the Federal University of Ceará in Brazil and received his PhD in Applied Physics from the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). Luewton is currently in charge of the EHDA laboratory at NHL University of Applied Sciences in Leeuwarden. His team has worked with a range of companies and research institutes in Europe and South America, and focuses in particular on the application of EHDA in water technology systems. Applications developed and researched by the EHDA laboratory to date include desalination systems, gas odorisation systems, emulsification and spray drying.
