Many things will change when you become a student. This will generally work out fine, but sometimes you could use a little help.
Student support is available in various ways. You can approach student counsellors, study mentors, and counsellors.
Many things will change when you become a student. This will generally work out fine, but sometimes you could use a little help. For example, when you experience difficulties during your studies (procrastination, study stress), personal problems, problems at home or when you have questions about studying with a disability (physical impairment or chronic illness). Our student counsellors are happy to help you in this case. They will listen to you and help you on your way if necessary.
At VHL, you can also study enjoyably and successfully if you have a disability or need support — for example, if you have ADHD or dyslexia. Additional guidance and tailored adjustments are available to help you.
You will meet your study mentor during one of the first weeks of your studies. The study mentor is your first contact point should you have study problems. You will consult with the study mentor about your study plan, study progress or about important choices during your studies. If you need assistance or if you want to have a conversation about personal matters, then you can go to one of the study mentors.
Sometimes you may feel that you are being treated unfairly or inappropriately. This may be due to unwanted, sexually charged conduct expressed in words (verbal or written) or acts, but it may also take the form of violence or discrimination. VHL has a counsellor for unwanted conduct. It is the task of the counsellor to listen to your complaints, and they can help you to find a solution. Furthermore, they can help you if you want to submit a formal complaint.
Information on the tasks of the counsellor and the handling of complaints by the complaints committee is included in the ‘Regulation on unwanted conduct’, which can be found on the Intranet under ‘regulations for students’. If you wish to speak to a counsellor, please enquire with the service point as to who you can turn to.
VHL considers it important that we treat each other with respect and integrity. This applies to contacts between students, and contacts between students and teachers. We also find this important in relationships with external parties with whom students and members of staff of VHL work together. This is why we have drawn up an integrity code and a code of conduct, which describe in formal but clear language what we believe is acceptable and proper behaviour and what is not. This is because we believe it is important that everybody knows what we can and may expect from each other.
