Studenten HVHL in een studentenhuis

Open days

As you prepare for your study abroad adventure, one of the key things on your to-do list is finding a cozy place to call home.

Housing

You'll be in charge of arranging your own accommodation, so before you depart to the Netherlands, make sure you've got this sorted (even if it's just temporary). Given the current housing shortage in The Netherlands, it can be a bit tricky to find a place. That's why we recommend starting your search at least 5 months before your study programme begins. But don't worry, we're here to help!

Housing hacks

  • The earlier you apply, the more choice you have.
  • Almost 50% of students find their room through friends and family. So tell everyone you are looking for a room!
  • Check whether the rental fees include utilities (water, heating, electricity and Internet).
  • It is common for men and women to live together in a shared house.
  • Make sure you read your rental contract carefully before signing it. Check what you are allowed (and not allowed) to do in your room. And check who you should speak to if there is a problem.
  • It’s common to pay for a deposit, however this should not exceed the amount of three months rent. Agencies have to follow Dutch law regulations concerning the deposit.
  • Check StudyinNL or Arnhem Student City for general information about finding a room.
  • Understand your rental contract. Visit WA.nl for clear info on Dutch tenancy law and independent guidance.
