What is the case?
This project is being carried out in the OmgevingsLAB. The municipality of Arnhem faces many future challenges, which have been translated into ambitions. These ambitions are outlined in policy documents such as the Green Vision 2017-2035, the Climate Adaptation Strategy, the Biodiversity Agenda, and the Tree Plan. These policy documents are written for the city as a whole. The municipality wants to translate these ambitions into solutions and measures for each neighbourhood.
What is the project doing about it?
In ten Arnhem neighbourhoods, a neighbourhood green agenda will be drawn up in full consultation with the residents. Students from the Management of the Living Environment programme will write the neighbourhood green agenda for the Arnhem neighbourhood of Klarendal.
The most important principle of this agenda is that the residents themselves contribute to the actions and ideas regarding greenery. It is the task of the municipality of Arnhem to support residents' initiatives (in areas such as greenery). To do this, the municipality must take a facilitating role, listening attentively and communicating connectively with the residents of the neighbourhood. The municipality must encourage residents to contribute.
What does the project deliver?
The project will produce a report on the opportunities and challenges of greenery in the neighbourhood and how residents can make a significant contribution. The participatory approach used in the creation of the policy document aligns perfectly with the spirit of the Environment and Planning Act.
In the short term, it is difficult to change the entire neighbourhood, but a first step can certainly be taken. The students will design and oversee the process. This process approach can be reused for other neighbourhood green agendas in Arnhem. The figure below visualises the process. The project has a duration of five months.
