Development of a practically applicable methodology for 'citizen participation in climate adaptation'. Implemented in five cities, including Leeuwarden.

What is the case?

Due to climate change, standards and/or acceptance limits for precipitation, heat and drought are increasingly being exceeded in urban areas. Municipalities and water boards have the task of ensuring climate-proof design. Cooperation with residents is essential here. To make the step to implementation, municipalities and water boards need insight into (1) micro-level effects (streets/buildings); (2) local experiences and perceptions by citizens; and (3) how citizens can be involved in measures.

What does the project do about this?

The goal is to develop a practically applicable methodology for "citizen participation in climate adaptation. The research is being conducted in five cities, including Leeuwarden. Various approaches from citizen science will be applied. Professionals and residents carry out measurements together (participatory monitoring), collect data on physical and social vulnerability in a short period of time and work out measures.

What does the project deliver?

The result is a practically applicable method for 'citizen participation in climate adaptation'.
