Professor of Sustainable Water Systems

Professor Peter van der Maas studied Environmental Science at the Prof. H.C. van Hall Institute in Groningen, a predecessor of Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences (BSc, 1991). He then studied Environmental Hygiene at Wageningen University & Research (MSc, 1993). In 2005, he obtained his PhD from Wageningen University with an innovative concept for removing NOx from industrial flue gases.

About the professor

The central theme of Peter's career as a water technologist (at Zuiveringsschap Drenthe), researcher (at WUR), and advisor (at Waterlaboratorium Noord) has been water quality management and the application of water technology. He was involved in research and design projects for industrial water and the monitoring of contaminated drinking water sources. Peter also played a key role in the technological design for ultrapure water production from treated wastewater in Emmen and the BODAC water purification technology applied there.

Since 2017, Peter has been the Professor of the Applied Research Group for Sustainable Water Systems at our university. “Through practice-oriented research and knowledge development, the applied research group strives to ensure the availability of sufficient and clean freshwater for all users. This includes people, nature, agriculture, and industry. It is a challenging and crucial societal task that we tackle together with lecturers, students, and numerous partners.”
