Professor of Sustainable Forestry at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences

Professor of Sustainable Forestry

Professor Ute Sass-Klaassen studied Tree Biology and Wood Sciences in Hamburg, Germany. During her PhD research in the 1990s, she focused on the drought sensitivity of the beech tree. Throughout her subsequent career, tree ring research has been a central theme. She initially worked as a lecturer and researcher at the Tree-Ring Lab at the University of Arizona. Later, she contributed to a foundation in archaeology and building history, where she dated wooden constructions and artifacts.

About the professor

Since 2003, Ute has been an Associate Professor with the Forest Ecology and Forest Management Group at Wageningen University & Research. She coordinated courses and supervised many bachelor’s, master’s, internship, and PhD students. Her over 100 publications were produced through collaboration in (inter)national networks. She was also Chair of the COST-actie STREeSS and President of the Association for Tree-Ring Research. In 2020, she was appointed Honorary Professor at the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development. Three years later, Ute started as Professor of Sustainable Forestry at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences.

The Applied Research Group for Sustainable Forestry is closely linked to the Forest and Nature Management programme at VHL. Lecturer-researchers are directly involved in research projects, and students complete their final projects at the applied research group, intern with our field partners, or participate in project work.
