Professor of Climate Smart Dairy Value Chains

Robert Baars (1962) graduated in 1988 with an MSc in Tropical Livestock Farming and defended his PhD thesis in 1996, both at Wageningen University. He has been an applied research group leader since September 2019. The integration of education, applied research, and agricultural practice has been the central theme of his career, both in the Netherlands and in the international (tropical) context.

About the professor

Robert Baars graduated from Wageningen University in 1988 with specialisations in Tropical Livestock Farming and Tropical Grasslands. In 1996, he earned his PhD with a thesis on the situation and management of rangelands in the Western Province of Zambia. Over the past 30 years, he has gained international experience and spent 13 years living and working in Zambia, Costa Rica, and Ethiopia. Since 2002, he has been employed at VHL, where he started as a lecturer, later became a programme coordinator and manager (2010), and eventually an associate applied research group leader and applied research group leader (2019).
