Seaweed as a sustainable solution

My name is Yair Ben-Jacov. I am a student of International Development Management, specialising in Sustainable Value Chains. During the final phase of my programme, I completed an internship in which I worked on sustainability issues in an international context.

Why I chose this programme

I chose this programme because I wanted to learn more about sustainability and what it truly means. I also wanted a study programme that would encourage me to work with an international outlook, rather than focusing solely on the Netherlands. What particularly appealed to me was learning how to contribute to tackling societal issues, both on a large and a small scale. It is about more than just obtaining a degree; there is a clear mission behind it.

The broad scope of the programme also appealed to me. You learn to develop solutions that do not fit within a single sector, which encourages you to look beyond boundaries and combine different perspectives. This makes it possible to come up with truly innovative and sustainable solutions.

What made my studies special

The lecturers’ field experience added great depth to the lessons and made the theory tangible. In addition, I found the opportunity to complete several internships and write a thesis very valuable, especially because you are encouraged to make an impact through a practical approach.

From the first year onwards, you work with real clients. This makes the programme immediately relevant and ensures that you learn how to deal with real-life issues. You work on actual problems faced by organisations, which is not only educational but also motivating.

Because the programme is so broad, you come into contact with many different themes. This helps you discover what suits you well, and what suits you less well. That is extremely helpful when making choices for the future.

International experiences that stay with you

The internships within IDM were true life experiences for me. I completed two international internships that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. One of them was in the Philippines, where I worked with seaweed farmers in a remote area.

These communities were completely dependent on the sea for their income and were in a vulnerable position. We worked on a business model in which seaweed cultivation not only provided a stable income but also contributed to protecting the sea. This experience showed me how important nature can be as a foundation for sustainable development.

It was also special to visit areas where people rarely see a Westerner. It felt as though I had gone back in time, with a simple way of life that at the same time offered a great deal of insight into what is truly important.

What the programme has given me

The programme has given me a broad and generalist perspective on sustainability, combined with valuable practical experience. I have learned to think critically and to look at complex issues from different perspectives.

I have also experienced that working in the development and sustainability sector requires a great deal of patience and perseverance. Change takes time, but I have seen that solutions are certainly possible if you are willing to think systemically and in the long term.

My advice to future students

If you are considering this programme, approach it with an open mind. It is a broad study programme, and it is perfectly fine if you do not yet know exactly which direction you want to take at the beginning. Many students only discover this later.

If you are curious about solving sustainability and development issues and are willing to take a practical approach, you can turn this programme into a highly valuable experience.
