From gap year to global citizen

BachelorClimate and EnvironmentInternational Development Management

My name is Noa Bussink, I’m 20 years old and live in the Netherlands. I’m in my second year of the International Development Management programme at Van Hall Larenstein. After a gap year full of travel, I discovered my passion for culture, nature and international cooperation, exactly what I’ve found in this programme.

Why I chose this study programme

While still in secondary school, I joined a taster day at the International Development Management (IDM) programme. I was positively surprised by the atmosphere, but decided to keep looking. Eventually I took a gap year to travel and that changed everything. I became fascinated by the diversity of cultures, the natural world, and the way laws and regulations differ across countries. Those experiences confirmed that IDM was the right choice for me. A second taster day later on gave me that same sense of belonging: I knew this was the place for me.

Practical experiences that made a difference

A highlight from my first year was the field week in Romania. Together with a group, I conducted a practical research project. As someone who learns best by doing, this was ideal. It also strengthened the connection with my classmates.

In my second year I did an internship in Bolivia, where I learned about sustainable coffee and cacao production. I studied the certification process and gained deep insights into the country, its culture and its people. I even learned Spanish! That period was incredibly valuable, it helped me grow both professionally and personally.

What I’ve gained and where I’m heading

I’m still in the middle of my studies, but IDM has already taught me a lot. Especially on a personal level, I’ve grown enormously. The combination of international topics, hands-on experience and self-development makes this programme the right fit for me.

My advice to future students

IDM is a broad, practical and unique programme where you can follow your own interests. Whether you’re into nature, food security or social justice, you’ll always find a topic that suits you. You’ll work on many group projects and research assignments where your opinion matters. Not every subject will appeal to you equally, but that variety helps you discover what truly fits. For me, it’s the ideal learning environment.
