From 1 September 2026, Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences (VHL) in Velp will launch the new Associate degree in Forest and Nature Management. Official approval was granted this week. The programme was already ready to launch, and with the official approval, the first students can now truly begin in September.
The Associate degree in Forest and Nature Management is a two-year Dutch bachelor’s programme with a strong practical focus. It is aimed at students who want to work in forest and nature management. There has been significant interest from prospective students in this new programme for some time, as well as a clear demand from the professional field. VHL has been the only university of applied sciences in the Netherlands to offer the well-known bachelor’s programme in Forest and Nature Management for many years. Building on this expertise, the new Associate degree has now been developed, enabling students to earn a fully recognised bachelor’s degree in two years.
The demand for well-trained professionals in the green sector is increasing. Land management organisations such as Staatsbosbeheer and Natuurmonumenten, consultancy firms, government bodies, and contractors in nature management face complex societal challenges, including climate adaptation, biodiversity loss, nitrogen issues, and increasing recreational pressure. At the same time, there is a growing shortage of employees who can contribute to practical solutions. Graduates with an Associate degree in Forest and Nature Management can enter the workforce directly in their field.
"We are really looking forward to welcoming students of this Associate degree in Velp from September at our beautiful green learning estate, and to training them in two years for a valuable bachelor’s degree," says Freek Rensen, programme manager for Forest and Nature Management. "We are very pleased to have now received the trust to start this programme."
The Associate degree in Forest and Nature Management was developed in close collaboration with organisations from the forestry and nature sector. Partners are involved in shaping the curriculum, formulating practical assignments, and providing internship opportunities.
The full-time Associate degree in Forest and Nature Management starts in the 2026-2027 academic year and is offered in Velp. During the open evening on 26 March in Velp, there will be ample opportunity to learn more about the programme.
