Severe traffic disruption on the A12 in April and May

Borden snelweg A12

Open days

From Tuesday 7 April to 14 May, the IJssel Bridge between Westervoort and Arnhem will be renovated.

The works will cause major traffic disruption in both directions, affecting motorists as well as cyclists. Increased congestion is also expected on public transport. Please allow for up to an extra hour of travel time, consider alternative transport, and plan your journey in advance.

On the A12, half of the lanes in both directions will be closed, the maximum speed will be reduced, and the cycle path will be closed. Rijkswaterstaat expects this to result in up to 60 minutes of additional travel time between Easter and Ascension Day. During the works on the IJssel Bridge, taking alternative routes is unlikely to help, as these will also be busy and subject to delays.

Plan your journey in advance

If you are travelling by car, consider choosing alternative transport such as cycling or public transport. Trains may be busier than usual, and buses will also be affected by the works. Therefore, check your public transport planner well before departure and allow sufficient travel time.

Disruption for cyclists

The cycle path along the A12 will also be closed. Cyclists have two alternative routes: the Westervoort Bridge and the ferry service between Lathum and Rheden. During the works, the bicycle ferry will be free of charge for pupils and students throughout the day on weekdays, and also for staff during peak hours. For current sailing times, please visit the ferry service website.

Traffic disruption during exam period

The roadworks will begin during the examination weeks of period 3. We strongly advise you—especially during this time, but also during regular teaching weeks—to allow sufficient extra travel time so that you can arrive in Velp on time and without stress.
