Higher ratings across nearly all themes, study facilities on the rise

Students at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences (HVHL) have once again expressed above-average satisfaction with their degree programmes this year. In the 2025 National Student Survey (NSS), HVHL students report greater satisfaction with their university compared to the average university of applied sciences student in the Netherlands. HVHL scores surpass the national average across all key themes. Students are especially positive about the atmosphere within their programme, the personal guidance they receive, and the engagement of their lecturers.

HVHL students are also more likely to say they would choose the same programme again based on their current experience. In total, the university scores significantly higher than the national average on 41 out of 50 detailed aspects. Moreover, 38 of these 50 aspects show an increase compared to 2024.

Strong scores for guidance and engagement

As in previous years, the themes of academic support and lecturer engagement and contact are rated very highly—key factors for academic success and student well-being. The theme ‘lecturers’ also stands out, particularly regarding their expertise and accessibility.

Study facilities show marked improvement

Compared to last year, there has been a notable improvement in student ratings of study facilities, such as classrooms, workspaces, and the library. These are rated significantly better than in 2024—clear evidence of targeted investments at both the Leeuwarden and Velp campuses.

Strong programme-specific results

More than 60% of HVHL’s programmes show increased satisfaction scores compared to last year. Several programmes received an overall satisfaction score of 4.0 or higher (on a scale of 1 to 5) in both Leeuwarden and Velp, reflecting students’ appreciation for the quality of education.

Response rate above national average

With a response rate of 41.6%, participation in the survey at HVHL was well above the national average of 31.8%. This makes the results a reliable indicator of student satisfaction at HVHL.

“These results are a great recognition of the dedication of our lecturers and staff,” says Jan van Iersel, Chair of the Executive Board. “They show that students feel seen, supported, and inspired. That’s exactly what we aim for.”
