Frequently asked questions and answers about International Development Management

First year

What does the first year demand of you?

The first year starts broadly and exploratively, giving you a good overview of the field. You’ll learn about international issues, the sector and its various players, providing a crucial foundation. Later in the year, you’ll go on an excursion to Romania, where you apply what you’ve learned in practice. This helps you better understand and implement your knowledge. Everything will fall into place.

International jobs

Can I only work for international NGOs after graduating?

No, besides NGOs (non-governmental organisations), you can also work for companies engaged in sustainable transitions, ranging from small businesses to multinationals like Unilever. There is high demand in the job market for experts who facilitate transitions in areas such as nature management, food security, and disaster prevention. You can work both in the Netherlands and abroad.

Skills

What skills will I learn during the programme?

You’ll acquire key skills like project management, communication, research, and collaboration with people from diverse cultures. These are useful not only for NGO roles but also for positions in the business sector. Flexibility and perseverance are also essential, as the field is constantly changing, requiring you to sometimes step out of your comfort zone.

English

Is English difficult in the programme?

Many students worry about their English-level beforehand, but if your English is good enough to meet the entry requirements, you’ll do fine. You’ll speak English daily, quickly becoming more confident and skilled. Most students master it in no time. Professionalising your English enhances your job market prospects and is particularly useful if you want to pursue an English-taught master’s programme after graduation.

Admission requirements

Admission requirements

To be admissible, you need to have a secondary school diploma comparable to the Dutch havo diploma, which is at least NLQF 4/EQF 4 level. You can check the website of Nuffic for an indication of the value of your diploma. Our admissions department will assess your diploma when you submit your application.

You also need to submit a language test result to prove your English proficiency. Some students are exempt from this requirement. To view which tests and scores are accepted, and to check if you are exempt from proving your English language skills, click here for further details.
