Frequently asked questions and answers about Animal Husbandry

Production animals/horses

Are all the courses about production animals/horses?

No, in both Animals, Society and Business and Equine, Sports and Business, about half of the courses focus on animals. For example, you learn about animal welfare, behaviour, reproduction, and nutrition. The other half consists of business-related courses, such as marketing, entrepreneurship, and business plan development. Both types of knowledge will be essential in your future career. There are no animals on campus. During internships and practical lessons, you will certainly work with animals, but this is not part of your daily programme.

Jobs

Are there jobs in this sector, and what can you do?

Yes, there are certainly jobs in this sector! You are not trained to run a horse stable, riding school, or livestock farm (the primary sector), but rather for the businesses surrounding them. Think of suppliers, consultancy firms, or organisations working with animals. There is high demand for roles such as adviser, breeding specialist, or event organiser. Many students even secure a job before graduating. So, there are plenty of career opportunities.

Skills

What skills do I need?

You learn how to apply theory to solve real-world problems. Employers are looking for people who take initiative and come up with ideas and solutions independently, so being proactive is important. You also need to be flexible, as the sector is constantly evolving, and you must be able to adapt quickly to new challenges. Finally, strong communication skills are essential, enabling you to collaborate effectively and explain your ideas clearly.

English

Is English difficult in the programme?

Many students have initial doubts about their English, but if your English is sufficient to be admitted, you will manage just fine. You speak English every day, so you quickly adapt and keep improving. Most students master it in no time. By professionalising your English, you enhance your job market opportunities and gain an advantage if you want to continue with an English-taught master programme.

Admission requirements

Admission requirements

To be admissible, you need to have a secondary school diploma comparable to the Dutch havo diploma, which is at least NLQF 4/EQF 4 level. You can check the website of Nuffic for an indication of the value of your diploma. Our admissions department will assess your diploma when you submit your application.

You also need to submit a language test result to prove your English proficiency. Some students are exempt from this requirement. To view which tests and scores are accepted, and to check if you are exempt from proving your English language skills, click here for further details.
