The Marine Management and Conservation (MMC) research group links the coast and sea management programme with practical questions from the field through forward-looking and practice-oriented research projects and assignments: students and researchers collaborate with stakeholders on providing solutions to practical challenges. Additionally, the acquired knowledge on human use of the marine environment will be immediately included in the curricula of the degree programmes.
Marine Management and Conservation focuses on the following three areas:
The “Reef Restoration” theme focuses on the development of new applications that can accelerate reef recovery or limit further decline. It includes:
The expertise in this area at VHL University of Applied Sciences (VHL) lies mainly in the application of artificial reefs and reintroducing key species to the coral reef.
The following projects are part of the “Reef Restoration” theme:
For more information about these projects, please contact Alwin Hylkema ([email protected]).
Sustainable use and management of the North Sea and the Wadden Sea region are central to this theme. We use the North Sea and the Wadden Sea as study areas and focus on the governance aspect in particular. Governance relates to the decision-making process and the implementation of decisions or lack thereof.
For more information about the theme or its projects, please contact David Goldsborough by e-mail: [email protected].
Within the theme of Wadden Sea and fish migration, the team works on gaining new knowledge about the interaction between the Wadden Sea and the hinterland and people. We focus on fish ecology and fish migration in particular. How can we make the boundaries of Wadden Sea region less clearly defined? How can we repair the relationship between the Wadden Sea and the hinterland, and in doing so, initiate the recovery of fish populations? We examine fish from a Wadden-wide perspective, and examine Wadden-wide interests from a fish perspective. It includes:
The expertise in this area at VHL lies mainly in determining fish migration and the effectiveness of fish passages.
The following projects are part of the theme of the Wadden Sea and fish migration:
