The winners of the LC Awards 2021

Students of VHL University of Applied Sciences (VHL) impressed at the LC Awards 2021. During the presentation of these coveted prizes for MBO, HBO and university students on Tuesday 8 June in the city theatre De Harmonie in Leeuwarden, they swept the two top awards to be had. Sanne Koopmans and Renske Atsma (students of Applied Animal Science) won the jury prize in the Bachelor category with their project Bodemraad. The project Zelfvoorzienende Ark (Self-sufficient Ark) by students Maaike Kunst, Jan Auke Kooistra, Marten de Vlugt and Robert Grit (Environmental Sciences) was awarded the public choice award, which could be voted for online prior to the LC Awards.

Three HVHL projects nominated

Three projects from VHL University of Applied Sciences were nominated for the LC Awards. These projects were previously voted best projects from Leeuwarden during the HVHL Golden Globes. The vote took place at the university of applied sciences itself and staff were able to vote. Besides the two winning projects, the project Duurzaam Drijvend Studentenhuis (Sustainable Floating Student Residence) by Benjamin Cadée (student of Coastal and Marine Management) also competed in the LC Awards 2021.

Jury Prize: Bodemraad

The jury praised the Bodemraad project by Applied Animal Science students Sanne Koopmans and Renske Atsma. They praised the direct applicability of the advice book for healthier soil and saw a strong link with Friesland. The Bodemraad is a booklet for inspiration. It does not provide ready-made solutions, but gives inspiration to livestock farmers to move in a new direction.

Public choice award: Zelfvoorzienende Ark

Maaike Kunst, Jan Auke Kooistra, Marten de Vlugt and Robert Grit (Environmental Sciences) proved to be the public's favourite. Not only in the auditorium, but also in the run-up to the vote, people could vote for the projects nominated for the public choice award at lc.nl/awards. Commissioned by Paul van Middelaar, who was also present during the LC Awards, a sustainable and innovative water system was designed for a Scientific Ecological Environment (WEL).

Honourable mention: Duurzaam Drijvend Studentenhuis

Despite a great presentation, the project Duurzaam Drijvend Studentenhuis by Benjamin Cadée (student of Coastal and Marine Management) did not win any prizes. With youthful enthusiasm, inspiration from nature and knowledge of innovation, he showed how sustainability can surprise and be more beneficial than ever. Houses made for and by students.

About the LC Awards

Every year in June, the Leeuwarder Courant, in collaboration with Frisian MBO, HBO and university institutions, presents the LC Awards. These awards are intended to put special student projects in the spotlight. Every year, the jury of experts changes and decides on the main awards. In addition, the public vote for the public choice award through an online campaign. Besides the beneficial publicity and a beautiful award, the projects also receive a cheque of €333.33.

Due to the Corona pandemic, the 2020 edition could unfortunately not take place. This year the award ceremony took place in front of a small audience in city theatre De Harmonie in Leeuwarden. It was certainly a memorable evening for HVHL and the winning students!
