Four AISHE stars for Environmental Solutions and Coastal & Marine Management

12-12-2019

The Environmental Solutions and Coastal & Marine Management degree programmes have recently successfully passed the four-star AISHE audit. This makes them one of the few degree programmes in the Netherlands to receive this high rating in the field of sustainability. As the most sustainable university of applied sciences in the Netherlands, we are of course extremely proud of this! Only the Built Environment programmes at the HAN University of Applied Sciences and International Tourism at Stenden preceded our degree programmes.

Assessment

The fact that the Sutainable Development Goals (SDGs) are embedded in the programmes was much praised during the assessment. The students involved and the simple fact that students are involved in the development of the programme itself also received commendation. Sustainability clearly plays an important role throughout the entire programme and is something that the panel was pleased to see. For intance, the auditors were impressed by the Canapé Project, the joint programme run by Environmental Sciences and Coastal & Marine Management, which includes several innovative projects. This programme not only has a social dimension within the province of Friesland, but also holds significance for the international partners of this Interreg project. The auditors found the themes very appropriate for sustainable development, such as CO2 storage and climate adaptation.

Sustainable Higher Education (AISHE) certification

For the Sustainable Higher Education quality certification, the advisory organisation Hobéon applies the Auditing Instrument for Sustainability in Higher Education (AISHE) assessment framework. AISHE is used to measure sustainable development in universities and universities of applied sciences. The quality certification has five development levels. From development level three onwards, an organisation may apply to the NVAO (Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders) for the Special Quality Certification of Sustainable Higher Education (Bijzonder Kenmerk Duurzaam Hoger Onderwijs). Assessment takes place on the basis of a self-evaluation, a document analysis and audit interviews with the management, lecturers, students, support staff and the professional field. The quality certification is valid for three years, after which recertification takes place.
